KWHA summoned Revenue Agency over State of Origin

The Kwara State House of Assembly has directed the state Internal Revenue Service to immediately withdraw letter of recertification of State of Origin written to various higher institutions in the State.

Similarly it has also directed its Committee on Finance and Appropriation to invite the state Internal Revenue Service for clarification on the status of the old version of the Local Government certificate of origin.

The legislature gave the directives today in Ilorin, while considering a Motion on "Contradictions arising from issuance of certificate of Local Government of origin" raised by a member representing Ilorin North/West Constituency Hon. Abdulrafiu Abdulrahman.

Reading the resolutions of the House, the Deputy Speaker Elder Matthew Okedare who presided over the sitting, said the directives became necessary to avoid unnecessary hardship occasioned by the directive on the students of Kwara origin in tertiary institutions as well as clear grey on issues surrounding the recertification exercise.

The House equally mandated the state Internal Revenue Service to as a matter of urgency suspend its announcement/advocacy on Media houses and in tertiary institutions until grey areas surrounding the issues were resolved by the State House of Assembly.
Hon. Abdulrahman had while raising the Motion observed among other things that there was no policy invalidating the current certificate and queried the internal circular issued by the Authorities of University of Ilorin on the recertification exercise.

He said though there was high rate of abuse of the certificate by non indigenes, the House was worried that the State Internal Revenue Service gave premium on revenue generating aspect than verifying the authencity of the bearers of the certificate, thereby derailing from the main motive behind the exercise.

Meanwhile the state House of Assembly has commended the Kwara State Governor Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed for releasing fund to provide palliative on the collapsed Moro bridge along Ilorin/ lgbeti /Benin Republic International route to alleviate the suffering occasioned by the collapsed bridge.

The House made the commendation today following an update on the collapsed Moro bridge and other Federal roads by the Chairman of the House Committee on Energy,Works and Transport Hon. Matthew Babaoye.

The Deputy Speaker explained that with this intervention, the State Governor had demonstrated that he was sensitive to the yearnings of the people.

Hon. Babaoye had while updating the House disclosed that the state government had released fund for palliative measures for the collapsed bridge ,while the federal Government according to him had placed tenders for the award of contract for the reconstruction of Moro, and Ohan bridges and construction of Afon -Aboto and Oyo state boundary road which he said were included in this year's federal government budget.
